The artistic contribution of Ambientha thanks to the ArtLab project continues and the purpose to allow everyone to have artworks within the domestic walls as well. They continue with a typology of art that is often an outcome of reticence in the public eye because far from the classic idea of “beauty”. We are talking about Abstract Art and how it is able to revolutionize our way to look at reality, after a hundred years from its birth, until today. We will try to answer the statement, that we often heard about, “I can do this myself”, by introducing you to the artists who have given birth to this trend not just artistic, but also of genius and thinking. From here comes the inspiration, together with the masterpiece images leader Bridgeman Images, for the realization of wallpapers with the most famous paintings of those authors who have revolutionized our way of thinking and observing. Let’s start with Wassily Kandinskij, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevič.
What was going on in Europe at the beginning of the XX century: Abstract Art borns with Kandinskij and Klee
Drafting an identity card of the Abstract Art with the name and surname of the founders, date and place of birth is certainly not easy. In fact, at the beginning of the twentieth century there were many outbreaks that would eventually alert us that something new was coming. Colours, shapes, lines, with no apparent meaning, fill the canvases and tell us about a new world about to be born. A world that nowadays, thanks to Ambientha, is really accessible to all: to explore, understand and love.
Among the great pioneers of the non-figurative arts, that do not therefore consider human elements, animals and recognizable objects within an artwork, we find Wassily Kandinskij and Paul Klee. The former, painter born in Moscow in 1866, is the major exponent of the Lyrical Abstraction that, thanks to his poetic approach linked to music and notes arrangements, conceives the canva as a pentagram where every shape dances and narrates emotions and feelings. The latter, Paul Klee, was born in Bern in 1879 and became the great master of colour and graphic art after a journey in Tunis which revolutionized his technique, often linked to small formats and watercolour.
The revolution of Abstract Art
The two artists embarked on their journey together in 1911 when they exhibited the Der Blauer Reiter (The blue rider) in Munich.. It was a group of artists involved in the organization of expositions and the drafting of their almanac whose aim was to introduce the idea of contemporary art through the uniqueness and freedom of every artist and the expression of their own poetic and symbolic concepts with the use of the “Point and line to plane”, as Kandinskij said in his famous essay dedicated to the aesthetics of shapes.
This treaty is a critical essay resulting from the lessons given by the artist at the school of art and design Bauhaus. The sequence of shapes and the mindful chromatic choices of Kandinskij and Klee perfectly lend themselves for the furnishing arrangements combining all the artistic practices, just like Bauhaus taught. Abstract Art has entered the world of art and design and will surely be talked about a lot.
What happens now within our houses thanks to the contemporary Art
The words of one of the fathers of Abstract Art are the ones that best describe the path followed by Ambientha together with Bridgeman Images: “Art is an opportunity to change our perspective.” (Paul Klee). It is indeed on the continuous research of new perspectives that the laboratory of ideas and projects ArtLab relies: adjusting our sight to get surprised by innovative outlooks in our houses and in the places we frequent is the goal of these two partners.
And with Abstract Art of Wassily Kandinskij, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevič the marvel is even bigger. The lines and shapes realized by these artists are, without any doubt, well suitable in modern environments with defined and clean profiles. It is indeed easy to imagine a wall decorated with a wallpaper, reproducing the paintings of Paul Klee or Piet Mondrian, being the background of a living room furnished with the renowned Arco lamp projected by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962 and realized by the italian furnishing company Flos, or rather the iconic LC2 sofa by designer Le Corbusier, projected in 1928 and produced by Cassina brand, and still topical.
Piet Mondrian: harmony on walls
Yes, an “abstract” wallpaper for the figures depicted but extremely concrete as for the materials and textures. The realization of a wallpaper will be even higher in quality if we refer to the extremists of the intense colour: Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevič.
ArtLab comes up with Piet Mondrian, the artist of primary colours and geometrical combinations. An artistic identifiability, product of meticulous studies and a journey starting with the representation of landscapes and still life, of which he was an outstanding figurative painter, all the way to his most popular colour combinations.
The research of harmony of the Dutch artist relies on the simplification and stylization of his poetry: the rhythm he was able to convey to his canvas is now, thanks to Ambientha, reintroduced on the walls surrounding us.
Kazimir Malevič: unconventional for wallpapers
We move to Russia, specifically in Moscow, where in 1904 a young man called Kazimir Malevič arrives and develops his art between Cubism and Futurism, until he reaches, in 1915, Suprematism, namely the overcoming of each movement of the past in favour of the cleanliness of shapes and colours. As the painter himself states: “For suprematism I mean the supremacy of pure sensitivity in art. […] The object itself does not mean anything. Art attains with suprematism the pure expression without representation…”.
However, Malevič is not only the artist known for the totally white and black canvas, who would have small in common with the author wallpapers, but he has been able to create a dialogue between figures on his canvas, like musical geometrical compositions. The difficult understanding of this artist, due also to his life spent during the totalitarian regime, makes him inscrutable in the constant oscillation between monochrome paintings, like the famous “White on white”, and the interpretations of impressionist nature. The choice of this artist for ArtLab is surely unconventional and brave, but able to make you fall for it.
Why do we consider Abstract Art still unusual even after being used to much odder artworks such as the “banana” by Maurizio Cattelan exposed with tape at the Art Basel expo of Miami or the artistic performances with a high emotional impact by Marina Abramović? Maybe because our eye should be more trained to notice the artworks that do not have a recognizable and easily identifiable human appearance, or maybe these figures are just simply hidden and more difficult to spot!

“Tailor-made” means precision, accuracy and even dedication. Standardisation often cannot meet all requirements, personal tastes or particular measures, for example. Hence the idea of Ambientha, which has become a reality, to cut the bespoke wallpaper for each individual project, not only the perimeter and total surface of the wall but also the cutting of each sheet.
