Lauren Wan gets inspiration from her reach collection of drawing albums full of sketches, which spontaneously record her journeys and what she observes, thus capturing the joy of that moments.
Ambientha begins its collaboration with Lauren Wan for the realization of artistic wallpapers in January 2019. We find the designs inspired to Amazonia, to the preservation of the most important biodiversity worldwide, among the first exclusive proposals drawn for Ambientha. An evocative thematic which has generated wallpapers enriched by the colors of the tropical nature and earth, the ideal option for decorating your spaces with an ethnic chic style.

Tell us something about yourself, what are the passions you can’t live without?
I am a wife of an Industrial Designer, proud Hong Kong girl and mother of two beautiful young adults. I like to think that i’m authentic, genuine and kind hearted. I didn’t choose to be a visual artist. My childhood dream was to be a journalist. After working 2 yrs as a young production assistant for a film making company my fascination for movies/film took over and hoped to be a film maker. Yet, visual art chose me as a career. I received my Master of Art from the Royal College of Art in London. Majored in Textile and Print making.
You have traveled the world in your life, do you want to tell us something about your travels?
As the proverb says, “Traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books”. After my first long distant trip from Hong Kong to Paris my hunger to see the world grew. I have not yet traveled the world. But my travel experience taught me and confirmed that money can’t purchase deep joy and inner peace while shallow superiority or convenience can be obtained by rich and famous. I encountered some of the most vibrant smiley faces and happy hearts from the poorest part of the world.
Some of your works have been chosen to be part of the permanent collection at the Art’s Museum of Hong Kong, how did it go?
I submitted my fine art piece “Opium Salad” for the Hong Kong Art Biennial exhibition and was blessed to be chosen as one of the top 10 artists. The Hong Kong Museum of Art gave each artist a solo exhibition and purchased my textile wall piece named “Psalms 23” as part of their permanent collection.
You have worked for established brands and have created artworks for different types of products, which projects bring you the most satisfaction?
In my 25 years professional career serving 5 different industries all over the globe: Fashion apparel, Home Furnishing, Dinnerware, Stationery and Fine Art. I have to think the most amazing and fulfilling project was working with Villeroy & Boch in Germany. They had me travel to their headquarter in Mettlach to absorb their heritage, visited their factory and museum to learn their unique corporate DNA and history. I stayed at their incredible castle for a week looked after by a travel guide. It was such an unbelievable experience as an artist. I was honored to work on V&B’s five most iconic collection including Luxembourg and French Garden.

In addition to being a professional artist, you are also a teacher, who are your students? How do you approach your teaching?
I view art teaching as a way of serving my art community. My first teaching opportunity was as a visiting lecturer for textile degree students at Nottingham University in England. Then at the Hong Kong Museum of Art conducting watercolor painting workshop as an instructor where most of my students were art teachers. I also shared my creative process at Kean University as part of the recent Thinking Creatively conference. My current art students range from 4.5 yrs old kindergarteners, high schoolers, college art students and professionals. My approach to my teaching is to free my students own prejudice and self critical spirit. I believe in encouragement and confidence building. Creating painting is not black and white, it has to come from within, but discipline and hard working are vital. My role is to remove the veil from a window with a beautiful view and encourage them to go out and explore.

You are among the first artists who collaborated with Ambientha: how did you find the creative process and the themes proposed in the Inspiration Book?
I enjoyed working from a thoughtful philosophical brief which carried depth and cares for our environment, not merely for artificial pleasing. It excited me a lot knowing that my creative collaborator Ambientha shared the same creative viewpoint.
How did your designs Rainforest, Flora and Rio Reflections inspired by Amazonia come to life?
From the Inspiration Book, knowing Amazonia is more than just an aesthetic and superficial wallpaper design collection. Colors speak to me the most and its always the genesis of my creative process. The Inspirational Amazonia Breathing color theme by Ambientha led me to create color and texture palates at the early hand painted concept stage which was then successively refined in a digital realm. Although the final result is abstract, one can feel the composition of geography: mountain, forest, lake and river with each color theme representing these elements in the Amazonia collection. The multitude of green color theme conveying Rainforest, the deep magenta theme in Flora for the incredible flowers and the rich browns in Rio for earth and river.

Ambientha’s music playlists are the musical accompaniment of the interiors in which our products are included. Which song seems the best to you to accompany the Rainforest Reflections wallpaper you designed?

So let’s say goodbye, what are your artistic dreams for the future?
My artistic dream for the future would be a solo exhibition of my fine art in combination with my poetry and creative beautiful design for Hermès.
It’s been a year since that day of spring in Milan when the project went finally online. Up to then Ambientha was just a pile of files, surveys, moodboards, photographies, new collaborations… And then on March 26 ambientha.com was born.
