Elena Sabattini Doha chooses Caterina Varchetta for opening “The Day of Contemporary Art” fair
Organized by the Italian embassy in Dohaand by Katara, the exposition consists in canvas and porcelains made by the artist during her life experience in Qatar, some of which inedited and never exposed before. In the exhibition, entitled “No boundaries”,the artworksopenly communicate with one another, creating a “vivid” link between Caterina’s artistic background, influenced by the Italian and Neapolitan culture, and by the symbols of the local tradition and of the ever-changing landscape of Qatar.
The exposition belongs to “The Day of Contemporary Art” fair, an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through its network of Embassies, Consulates and Culture Institutes in order to introduce to the world the artistic contemporary Italian scene. The project also adheres to “XV Day of Contemporary Art”, made in Italy on October 12th by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and by the Association of Italian Museums of Contemporary Art.
«We’re really satisfied of taking part to this fair, coming up with an Italian artist who has made lots of her artworks right here in Doha, blending the distinctive hallmarks of both the Italian and the local culture. A real unique and suggestive interpretation, symbol of the new and interesting prospects of cultural exchange and artistic contamination, set up in recent years in Italy and Qatar».
Pasquale Salzano, Italian Ambassador in Qatar
The journey of the Neapolitan artist narrates the purpose of smashing barriers
. Katara Cultural Village represents a major step for Caterina Varchetta’s progress, who, starting from Naples, passing by London and Paris, has expressed her artistic universe through the paint on canvas practice – conceived almost as a battlefield between nets, pigments, gold leaves and many other unconventional materials – and porcelain. Starting with an attentive research on the latter, the artist produces unique porcelains, as a result from endless cookings into the oven, which symbolizes a continuous oscillation between power and strength and fragility, light and shadow, energy and sensitivity.
“No boundaries” in Doha wants to narrate exactly this: the smashing of all barriers and distances through the contact between distant artistic practices, which in Caterina artworks interact with each other and generate a new emotional journey.
Everything’s a Canvas. From porcelains to wallpapers
The dialogue between distant artistic practices is what interests Caterina most, and, in the same way, it is furthermore inspirational for Ambientha’s illustrators and designers, engaged for the production of artistic wallpapers.
Walls become a cue and a tool for more and more innovative artistic choices. It is, once again, thanks to the Made in Italy, that graphic elements of architecture and even fashion merge together to “dress” the walls of our houses and other interiors where we spend most of the day. They are just like paintings and portraits, but they also enable us to get immersed in new emotions thanks to their major sizes.
“No boundaries” for Ambientha is among the sartorial art too, in particular among wool, rock art, fashion and design of the exclusive wallpaper designed by Ambientha in collaboration with the stylists Giuliano&Giusy Marelli: “Knitting Rock Art, like a fabric on the wall”. There are no barriers or boundaries between art practices, and so Caterina as well, refuses both the self and the outside-imposed limits through her artworks.
Who is Caterina Varchetta and why her artworks are considered “No boundaries”
Caterina Varchetta combines the painting on porcelain with the painting on canvas in projects in which boundaries between the two techniques are lowering more and more. Her creations can be found among collectors from all over the world (United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Argentina, Germany, Scotland, England, Italy, France and Qatar).
It was 1321. The bells of the Basilica of San Francesco in Ravenna rang the twilight hours in honor of the great poet Dante Alighieri. Seven hundred years have passed, but still every night those same bells “sing” thirteen strokes for him, as if they were intoning his famous triplets. We join Italy and the whole world of culture in the celebrations for the seven hundredth anniversary of the death of the Supreme Poet…
Salone del Mobile 2019 has hit the 58th edition. The show, international leader in the home decor industry, will be held during the second week of April, from Tuesday 9 to Sunday 14, in Fiera Milano Rho.
One of the most loved artists of all time. But even more criticized, laughed at in life, copied and paid for, when by now the money obtained from the sale of his works was no longer needed. He who started schools of thought and artistic practice that are still professed and taught today. We are talking about the famous painter Vincent van Gogh, through his most famous works now in giant format, but within the reach of anyone who wants to enjoy them.
